Waynesville, Jack Thomas Burrus, age 87, died Sunday, October 5, 2008 at Memorial Mission Hospital. He was a native of Haywood County and was the son of the late Barney C. and Hattie Smathers Burrus. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force during WWII and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Jack was a retired tax auditor for the state of North Carolina. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bessie Mae Newman Burrus, a daughter, Martha B. Avery and her husband, Randall of Athens, GA; a son, William B. Burrus and his wife, Kathy of Waynesville; a half brother, Robert B. Smathers of Swannanoa and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008 in the chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville with Mr. David Grissom and Reverend Herman Toney officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 931, Waynesville, NC 28786.
