Balsam Grove, Jack Verlin Edwards, age 83, went peacefully home to be with our Lord while at home in Balsam Grove, North Carolina on Thursday, June 25, 2015. Jack was the son of our Lord Jesus Christ and the late James William and Mattie Artie Lucrecia Gibson Edwards. A Korean Conflict veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart, he was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. He worked most of his life in Haywood County and had lived in Balsam Grove for the past 17 years. Jack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lucy Woody Edwards; four biological children, Jerry Verlin Edwards of Gastonia, Cathi Brown and her husband, Luke, of Balsam Grove; Lucrecia "Lulu" Edwards Ray of Waynesville, Rita Hoyle Gunter of Cortez, Florida and Reverend James Olin Gillette of Pickens, South Carolina and Reverend Rhonda Y. Haney of Waynesville. As well as being a husband and father, he was also grandfather of 11, great-grandfather of 23, and great-great-grandfather of 4. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend James Olin Gillette and Reverend Rhonda Y. Haney officiating. Burial will follow at Dellwood Cemetery. Military gravesite rites will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home and at other times, the family will be at 6278 Parkway Hwy., Balsam Grove. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's memory to Transylvania Hospice, P.O. Box 2440, Brevard, NC 28712.
