Canton–Jack Neal Harkins, age 76, of Coffee Branch Road, died on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Gaston Moore "Morty" and Bessie Sellars Harkins. He was a self-employed farmer. Jack was a member of Long's United Methodist Church and the Canton McDonald's coffee club, whose members will serve as honorary pallbearers. Jack was a United States Army veteran stationed in Germany. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Sherrill Harkins of Canton and a sister, Ruby Lee Harkins Ingold of Carthage, NC; a step-sister, Reva Sova; and a step-brother, Percy Miller. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Jerry Denham and Reverend Doug Love officiating. Burial will follow at Long's Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence. Memorials may be made to Long's United Methodist Church, 1097 Coffee Branch Road, Canton, NC 28716.
