Waynesville, Jack Silas James, 92, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Robert and Lydia McElroy James. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Sanford, Sarah Haynes and Doris James; and a brother, Carroll James. Jack was a car hop at Charlie's Place for 25 years. He enjoyed working on lawn mowers, hot rods and he also built an airplane. Jack volunteered at Haywood Regional Medical Center with the Hospital Auxiliary for 21 years and received the "Volunteer of the Year" award in 2001 from Haywood County. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lucy Ledford James; two sisters, Bobbie Hall and Phyllis Ammons of Waynesville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, May 8. 2017 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Reverend Billy Ferguson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to Old Pathway Baptist Church, 44 Pinto Place, Waynesville, NC 28785.
