Waynesville, Jack Lyle, age 85, of 89 Walker Road, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2011 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. A native of Haywood County and former resident of Asheville and Gaffney, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Floyd and Annie Laurie Smathers Lyle and was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Rogers, and one brother, Clyde Lyle. He was a 1943 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and Cecil's Business College and served in the US Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Jack was former owner and operator of Stock Law Gate 66 from 1968 to 1988 and owner of Balsam Gallery Dulcimer from 1988 to present. He was a member and founding Ruling Elder of Covenant Presbyterian Church, former member of West Asheville Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and youth leader, and a former member and Ruling Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lena Nell Travis Lyle; three sons, Jack B. Lyle of Melbourne, Florida, Jeff F. Lyle and his wife, Sandy, and James E. Lyle and his wife, Karin, all of Waynesville; one brother, James Wayne Lyle, of Gaffney, South Carolina; and four grandchildren, Virginia Ann Lyle McCready and her husband, Matthew, Josh Lyle and his wife, Nacole, John Lyle, and Bryan Lyle. A funeral service and celebration of Jack's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2011 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Larry Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Enka. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to services.
