Clyde, Jack A. Major, age 90, of Quail Cove Road, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at his residence. Jack was born in Elgin, Illinois and had lived in Haywood County for the past 25 years. He was the son of the late Harry and Amanda Teachout Major and was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Carol Neel, and two brothers. Jack was a United States WWII Navy Veteran and was a survivor of the USS Block Island CVE-21 which was sunk on May 29, 1944. He was then placed on the newly commissioned USS Block Island CVE 106 where he served until his retirement. Jack was a member of the VFW, American Legion, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Crabtree Iron Duff Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Crabtree Community Club. Jack was also a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Rita Major; three daughters, Jackie Whitford, of Phoenix, Arizona, Gail Wells of Glendale, Arizona and Terri Ann Dougherty of Glendale, Arizona; two sons, Alan and Keith Major both of Glendale, Arizona; two stepdaughters, Donna Everly of Winter Park, Florida and Linda Ramft of Faribault, Minnesota; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 30, 2012 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Larry LoMonaco officiating. Graveside military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Upper Crabtree Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
