Jack Smathers

Waynesville-Jack M. Smathers, age 69, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late William Clayton and Nola Wooten Smathers. Mr. Smathers was also preceded in death by three brothers, William Lloyd "Doc"Smathers, Harold Dean Smathers, and Charles Ray "Red" Smathers. He was a US Air Force Veteran. He was associated and supported East Waynesville Baptist Church. He loved life, his grandchildren, fishing, and being in the mountains. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Rita J. McDonald Smathers; one daughter, Jackie S. Cagle, of Waynesville; two sons, Bob Harris, of Waynesville, and Nick Smathers and his wife, Lisa, of Waynesville, three sisters, Jane Payne, of Alabama, Bobbi Banks of Waynesville, and Brenda Rathbone of Waynesville; two brothers, Carroll Smathers, and his wife, Bernice, of Waynesville and Bill Smathers and his wife, Nancy, of Canton; six grandchildren, Tiffany, Sara, Adam, Logan, Mike, and Chris; and one great-grandchild, Oliviah. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2007 at East Waynesville Baptist Church with the Reverend Josh Walls officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Serving as pallbearers, will be Ronnie Smathers, Terry Smathers, Brian Smathers, Carroll Smathers, Jr., Fred Grasty, Daniel Rice, Jody Gosnell, Jonathan Janes, and Adam Smathers.
