Jack Metcalf

Jack Lenoir Metcalf, age 76, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Friday, January 2, 2009 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late John Davis and Effie Rogers Metcalf. He served as an ordained deacon, Sunday school teacher and training union leader. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and also attended Hope Baptist Church in Beverly Hills, FL. Jack was a United States Air Force veteran. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clara Cable Metcalf; three daughters and their husbands, Vicky and Sam Godfrey of Canton, Anita and Brian Blazer of Heflin, Al, and LaDonna and Dan Welch of Greenville, SC; four sisters, Frances Free and her husband, Carlos, Cora Lee Metcalf, Martha Grooms, and Ruth Wright, all of Canton; three brothers, Rex Metcalf and his wife, Joann, of Rock Hill, SC, Zane Metcalf and his wife, Bernice, of Athens, GA, and Keith Metcalf and his wife, Barbara, of Elberton, GA; five grandchildren, Jason and Holly Godfrey of Canton, Elizabeth Welch of Scottsdale, AZ, Jeffery Welch of Washington, DC, Nathan Welch of Greenville, SC, and Anthony Blazer of Heflin, AL; two great-grandchildren, Helena and Penelope Godfrey of Canton; numerous nieces and nephews; and one aunt, Irene Rogers Rollins of Greenville, SC. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2009 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Dr. Perry Brindley officiating. Burial will follow at New Cruso Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Tommy Long, Jason Godfrey, Nathan Welch, Jeff Welch, Dan Welch, Brian Blazer, Sam Godfrey, Denton Ashe, Will Warren, and Bill Grogan. Honorary pallbearers will be Henson Long, J.M. Long, Zene Wells, Marcus Kirts, Don Kirts, Ed Eaton, Gale Goodman, and John Coffing.
