"1919 – 2015" Canton – Jack Thomas Smathers, age 95, went home to be with the Lord that he has served so faithfully on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Frank "Happy"Smathers and Maude Cabe Smathers. He was also preceded in death by one brother and three sisters. Jack was employed by Champion International for 42 years. He was chairman of Champion Employees Christmas Basket until he retired. Jack was named Man of the Year with the Kiwanis Club of Canton. Jack was chairman of the Red Cross Bloodmobile and was a ten gallon donor. He was a hospital volunteer for many years. He was active in the Bethel Presbyterian Church where he served as clerk of the Session for ten years. He was also a member of the Canton Presbyterian Church. Jack was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Emily Hamlet Smathers; one brother, J.Z. Smathers of Canton; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Friday, January 23, 2015 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Esta Jarrett, Reverend Riley Covin, and Reverend David Nash officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service. An inurnment will be held at 12 noon Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
