Jack William Smith, age 75, of the Crabtree Community died unexpectedly Friday, February 18, 2005. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Boring and Caldonia Davis Smith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Smith. He retired from Dayco in 1975 and was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Jack was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed working outdoors. He loved his family and especially his grandchildren. In addition to his wife of 56 years, Frankie Scott Smith, he is survived by three daughters, Jackie S. Hall and her husband, Noland and Donna S. Best and her husband, Harold all of Clyde and Rhonda F. Smith and her special friend, Troy B. Rathbone, Jr., both of Maggie Valley; a sister, Effie Keener of Clyde; five grandchildren, Autumn and Forrest Hall and Nathan, Kari and Anthony Best and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2005 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Reverend Katherine Crain and Reverend Cliff Hannah officiating. Burial will follow at Upper Crabtree Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robbie Best, Robert Smith, Adam Perry, Hal Beasley, Joe Arrington and Cecil Hannah. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Noland and Jackie Hall, 366 Bald Creek Road, Clyde. Memorials may be made to Upper Crabtree Cemetery Fund, 537 Bald Creek Road, Clyde, NC 28721.
