James Bentley, age 83, of the Dutch Cove Community died Saturday, August 8, 2009, at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Edward Washington and Katherine Pipes Bentley. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Frazier Bentley; two sisters, Phina Austin and Dorothy Bentley; and a brother, Herbert Bentley. "Cebo" retired from Champion International in 1988 with 41 years of service. He was a member of Morning Star United Methodist Church. He loved children and was especially fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim enjoyed the outdoors and walking the Appalachian Trail. He was an avid football fan with the Washington Redskins being his favorite professional football team. He was a United States Navy veteran serving in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Lou Boone Bentley; three sons, Thomas Michael Bentley and his wife, Vickie, of Canton, James Boone Bentley and his wife, Anne, of Newport News, VA, and Daniel Everett Bentley and his wife, Janice, of Canton; a daughter, Lydia Young and her husband, Paul, of Canton; two sisters, Elva Wells of Canton and Mary Winner of Asheville; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2009, at Morning Star United Methodist Church with the Reverend Doug Love officiating. Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements.
