James "Bill" W. Blankenship, a cherished soul whose heart radiated warmth and kindness, passed peacefully at his residence on November 9, 2024, with a smile upon his lips, exemplifying the joy that defined his life. Born on May 4, 1950, in the picturesque city of Asheville, Bill embraced life with an unquenchable spirit, leaving an indelible mark on all who loved him.
A proud graduate of Enka High School, and a devoted student at Western Carolina University, Bill dedicated his professional life as a laboratory technician at the NC State Mineral Laboratory and for Steelcase. His meticulous attention to detail and unwavering work ethic served him well and reflected the deep commitment he held for his craft and those around him.
Bill was a beacon of happiness—a gentle giant in both stature and heart. Ever ready to lend a hand or share a laugh, his presence was a source of comfort. Whether he was watching football and basketball games while enthusiastically rooting for Carolina with his dear friends Frank and Barbara—whose culinary talents always graced their gatherings—or tending to the beauty of his yard, joyfulness was Bill's constant companion. He shared a special bond with his brother, as together they restored a magnificent Chevy Chevelle, a reflection of his passion and craftsmanship.
Throughout his life, Bill cultivated friendships that stood the test of time. He treasured mornings spent at breakfast with his lifelong best friends, Charles and Jean Nelms, and found solace in the fellowship of church friends, Mike and Donna Woom. His laughter and lighthearted spirit were infectious, drawing people closer and carving out a space for love and camaraderie in their lives.
Bill's family was the axis upon which his world turned. He is survived by his stepdaughter, Sheila Lewis (Don) of Candler; and step-grandchildren, Cody Callahan, Cheryl Phillips, and Christopher Greene; and four step-great-grandchildren. His sister Diane Fletcher (Jack) of Hendersonville and brother Bruce Blankenship (Faye) of Candler carry forward his legacy of kindness and laughter, strengthened by the bonds they formed in their youth. Niece Sherri Taylor and nephews Kenneth Blankenship, Bruce Blankenship, Jr. (Terri), and Shaun Taylor, along with great-niece Rachel Blankenship and great-nephew Jacob Blankenship, are echoes of his spirit, remembering the love he showered upon them.
Bill's journey in this world is marked not only by the laughter he instigated and the moments he cherished but also by the heartfelt memories related to those who have passed on. He was eternally guided by the love of his departed wife, Mattie Seay Blankenship, who left us in 2005; step-children Rick, John, and Elizabeth Callahan; and his beloved parents, William Horace and Helen Stewart Blankenship, alongside his sister, Willa Ree Blankenship Cooper.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of James "Bill" Blankenship will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Bingham Heights Baptist Church, 245 Bingham Road, Asheville, NC 28806, with Pastor Jerry Myers officiating.
In a world that often overlooks gentleness, Bill Blankenship was a shining example of how kindness and friendship triumph over adversity. His vibrant spirit will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him, reminding us all to cherish each moment and extend a hand of love to our fellow travelers on this journey of life.
