James D. Carter, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his loving family on December 29, 2024. Born on August 11, 1931, in Knoxville, TN, he led a life filled with service, love, and laughter.
James dedicated thirty years of his life to the Canton Post Office as a letter carrier until his retirement. He was known not only for his diligent work ethic but also for the warmth he brought to his interactions with everyone he encountered. His friendly demeanor and love for telling jokes made him a cherished figure in the community.
During his honorable service in the U.S. Army, James was stationed in Japan, where he served in radio communications during the Korean War. This experience ignited his passion for music, leading him to pick up the lap steel guitar, an instrument he devoted himself to mastering. As an incredibly gifted steel guitar player, he brought joy to family gatherings and special events with friends.
James was deeply devoted to his family, especially his late wife, Nancy Jean Cook Carter, with whom he shared 64 beautiful years of marriage. He cherished his daughters, Debbie Carter (Ed Kreiling) of Marshall and Donna Souder (Ken) of Rockledge, FL, and his son, Robert "Robbie" Lester of Canton. James also took immense pride in his grandchildren: Terry King (Sara) of MS, Kari Anne Willis of Canton, Celia Renee Hyde of Canton, and Lindsey Turner (Jason) of SC. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren, Tyler Carter of TN, Myla Renee Ledford of Waynesville, Ashley Marie King of WI, and Lea Turner of SC. He is also survived by his brother, Howard Carter of Enka.
In addition to his family, James was known for his love of sports, especially football. He faithfully attended every Pisgah Football game he could, sitting alongside his brother Howard, cheering passionately for his team. Outside of his family and career, he enjoyed capturing memories on his camcorder, recording every special moment to share and replay with his loved ones.
He rejoined his beloved parents, Hobert M. and Lola Henry Carter, along with his late wife, Nancy, and siblings Vera Pickens, Myrtle Harvey, Helen Brown, Elmer Carter, Hobert Carter, Jr., and Lester Carter.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM. Pastor Matt Rhea will be officiating.
James will be missed dearly by all who knew him, but his spirit and legacy will continue through the lives he touched.
The care of Mr. Carter has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
