Waynesville-James Cleveland Fisher, age 83, died on Monday, October 15, 2007 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late David C. and Annie Rathbone Fisher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alva Haynes Fisher, who died in 1996; a son, Dwight Fisher; three sisters, Hazel Harris, Rose Parkins, and Glee Messer; and two brothers, Ben and Robert Fisher. He served in the US Army during World War II, having received the Bronze Star and later served in the US Air Force leaving service as a Staff Sergeant. James was employed in the Hose and Blanket Department of the Dayco Corporation, retiring after 36 years service, and he enjoyed farming. He is survived by two daughters, Joyce Austin and her husband, Paul, of the Bethel Community and Donna Massingale of Tuckaseegee; two sons, Ronald Fisher and his wife, Carolyn, and Michael Fisher and his wife, Alana, of Waynesville; two sisters, Marie Ewart and Esther Kirkpatrick of Lexington, NC; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at Beth Eden Baptist Church of which he was a member, with Reverend Carl Chastain officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Military graveside services will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
