Waynesville-James Dale Galloway, age 74, of 1248 Ratcliffe Cove Road, died on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at his residence after a brief illness. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Mark Levi and Esther Davis Galloway and was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Christine Anne Galloway, and a brother, Johnny Hoxit. James was a 1950 graduate of Waynesville Township High School where he played the clarinet in the band and accompanied the school chorus. He received his BA degree in education from Duke University in 1954. He was a US Army veteran and served a year in Frankfurt, Germany. He was employed by the Haywood County School System and taught English and Band at Crabtree, Bethel, and Clyde elementary schools and also taught in schools in South Carolina. James also taught English at Tuscola High School. James was also an instructor of carpentry and cabinetmaking at Haywood Community College for 17 years before his retirement in 1992. Throughout his life, he was an avid Duke basketball fan. He was a member of Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church and had been very active in the music programs of his church. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty W. Galloway; two daughters, Jaynie Martz of Newport News, VA and Catherine L. Galloway of Waynesville; and a son, James D. Galloway, Jr., also of Waynesville. A memorial service was held at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 with Reverend Mike Shuford officiating. Burial will be at a later date. The family received friends from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church, and at other times, at the residence.
