James Carroll Garren, age 81 passed away on Tuesday March 19, 2013 at The Homestead. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Alvin Whittaker and Daisy Rathbone Garren. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin Garren, Jr. and Billy Garren. He retired from Champion International in 1993 with 35 years of service and was a member of Clyde Wesleyan Church. James loved the outdoors, especially camping, fishing, and hunting. He adored his family and will be deeply missed by them all. He was a United States Army veteran serving in Korea. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Young Garren; two daughters, Deborah Garren Settle and her husband, Vince, of Arden and Lisa Garren and her partner, Nicole Mayer of Holland, Michigan; a brother, Glenn "Buddy" Garren of Waynesville; two grandchildren, Josh Settle and Julia Holland; four great-grandchildren, Brandon, Acacia, Meagan, and Jaedon; a great-great-grandson, Jaykob; and a special nephew, Mack Young of Canton. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Eddie Clayton officiating. Entombment will follow at The Horizon at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
