James Grose, Jr

Waynesville, Dr. James Chalmus "J.C." Grose, Jr., age 85, of 2445 South Lake Shore Drive, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at The Homestead. A native of Belmont, he was the son of the late James Chalmus and Ethel Robinson Grose and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Grose. J.C.'s life was forever changed at the young age of 16 while attending a retreat at Lake Junaluska. It was at that point he felt called to the ministry, and he never looked back. A short time later, at age 17, J.C. delivered his first sermon in Cleveland, North Carolina. He received his Master's of Divinity from Duke University and was ordained in 1956. J.C. received his Doctor of Ministry from Drew University in 1984. Over his lifetime, J.C. served 23 churches and 5 post-retirement churches. His hobby, his passion and his love was preaching and teaching the Word of God. The verse that most identifies with J.C.'s life was II Timothy 4:7, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Dr. Grose is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Hicks Grose; two sons, James C. Grose, III and his wife, Xinia, of Winston-Salem and Joseph Stanley Grose of Lake Junaluska; two sisters, Reita Cockrell of Southport and Mary Bobis of Matthews; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Hazelwood Presbyterian Church with Reverend Patrick Womack officiating. An additional funeral service will follow that day at 4:00 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville with Reverend Claude Kayler and Dr. Terry Mathews officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24th at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
