JAMES W. GUNTER
Waynesville-James Wesley ''Red'' Gunter, age 85, of 33 Crestridge Drive, died Sunday, December 30, 2002 at Britthaven of Clyde.
A native of Stevenson, Alabama, he was the son of Rufus and Rebecca Burgess Gunter. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jane Alexander; and three sisters. He was employed by Dayco, having worked in the Maintenance Department for 28 years before retiring in 1979. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II and served in Japan. He enjoyed deer hunting and gardening and was of Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Kate Setzer Gunter; one stepdaughter, Carolyn McCarter, and her husband, Oscar, of Waynesville; two stepsons, Robert Moody, and his wife Dot, of Clyde and Robert Dotson of Waynesville; two sisters, Lena Green and Mary Wyatt, both of Waynesville; three half sisters, Lucy Clark, of Asheville, Peggy Vaughn and Susan Ward, both of South Carolina; a brother, Jesse Ray Gunter, and his wife, Jessie Ann, of Florida; three half brothers, Joe, David, and John Gunter of South Carolina; two grandsons; nineteen stepgrandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2002 in the mausoleum chapel of Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens with Reverend G. W. Jameson officiating. Burial will follow. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Bruce Smathers, Coleman Wilson, Beecher Allison, Horace Green, Charles Dotson, Mark Bryson, and Marshall Caldwell. Memorials may be made Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
