James Edgar Harkins, born February 27, 1926, in Canton, NC to the late Ed and Lottie Harkins, died February 24, 2011. James was married 57 years to Betty Collins Harkins, who survives him. He was preceded in death by an infant son, James Michael Harkins. He is also survived by his children, Dr. Roderick A. Harkins of Mansfield, TX, Steven W. Harkins and his wife, Sherrie, of Wilson, NC, and Wesley A. Harkins of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Zack Harkins, Emily Harkins Cole and her husband, Nolan, and Nick Harkins; great-grandson, Karson Harkins. He served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II, in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War, and in the Army Reserves as a First Lieutenant. A 1950 mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Alabama, he retired from Champion Papers after 37 years of service. Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, 725 Asbury Road, Candler, NC with the Reverend Wes Alston officiating. His family will receive friends following the service. Jim was a dedicated member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Francis Asbury UMC or Hominy Valley ABCCM.
