James Hord

James R. Hord "1939 – 2013" Canton - James R. Hord, 74, of Haywood County, passed away at the VA Medical Center in Asheville on Dec. 26, 2013 following a period of declining health. James was one of two sons of the late Loren S. "Boney" Hord and Valda Ree Hord of Shelby, NC, but lived most of his life in Candler, NC with his late wife of 30 years, Donna K. Hord. James served our country in the Air Force from 1959 - 1962. As a resident of Buncombe County, James worked as a metal fabricator for Asheville Heating and Cooling and on the BASF facility in Enka for the Yeargan Construction Co. James was an avid hunter and fisherman and could often be found at Ward's Carp Lake. Afterwards, he would sit down for a cup of coffee at the Waffle House in Enka. He is survived by his brother; Steve Hord and his wife, Evelyn, and their two children, Matt and Allison; daughter, Cathy Brown and her husband, Frank, and her daughter, Danielle Dempsey; his daughter, Donna Morales and her husband, Mauricio, and their two children, Andrew and Stephanie; son, Frank Alley and his wife, Angie, and their daughter Katie; daughter, Delores Ann Ward and her husband, Danny, and their children Daniel, Cody, Amber and Zachary; daughter, Sonya Banks-Spears and her husband, Adam, and their children Meghan, Jacob and Julia; his son Loren S. Hord II; two great- grand children, Havilynd Trull and Ezra Futral; his son, Brian Neill; lifelong friend Donnie Rippey; and honorary son, Roland Herbstreit. The family will celebrate James' life with a memorial on Monday Dec. 30 at Faith Community Church at 289 Industrial Park Waynesville, NC 28786 with services at 2:00 PM and reception following. James will be honored with a private family graveside service at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain where his remains will be laid to rest at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the VA Medical Center, 1100 Tunnel Rd Asheville, NC 28805 or the Faith Community Church.
