James Leatherwood, Jr.

March 28, 1921 — January 16, 2017

Waynesville, James Horace Leatherwood, Jr., 95, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017 at Maggie Valley Nursing Home & Rehab. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James Horace and Mattie Franklin Leatherwood, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army having served in WWII where he was stationed in southern Germany. James retired from Haywood Community College as a maintenance supervisor. He will be remembered for being a very hard worker, dedicated farmer and someone who enjoyed being in the outdoors hunting and fishing. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 75 years, Louise Noland Leatherwood; daughter, Linda Rogers and her husband, Harold; son, Jimmy Leatherwood and his wife, Mary all of Waynesville; four grandchildren, Sammie Rogers Leffler (David), David T. Leatherwood (Amber), James G. Rogers (Sheila) and James G. Leatherwood, Jr. (Carmon); two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Liz Leffler; one great-great grandchild, Emily Leatherwood; one great-great-great grandchild, Walker Leffler and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Tom Tout officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Waynesville VFW Post 5202 Relief Fund, 216 Miller Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
