James Massie

Candler-James Marcell Massie, age 82, of 171 Justice Ridge Road, died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Haywood County and had lived in Buncombe County for many years. He was a son of the late Garfield and Arbie Radford Massie. He was also preceded in death by a son, Douglas Marcell Massie, 2 sisters, Ruth Miller and Mamie Pickard and 2 brothers, Ira and Moody Massie. He retired in 1984 as a locomotive engineer with Champion International with over 38 years of service. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Geraldine Styles Massie, two daughters, Patricia Ball and her husband Charles, Helen Whitmire, two sons, Steve Massie and James Robertson and his wife Stacey, all of Candler, one brother, Lawrence Massie of Candler, 3 grandchildren, Chuck Ball, Marcella Ownbey and Emily Whitmire and one great-granddaughter, Katie Robertson and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Butch Stillwell officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park in Candler. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the services and at other times, the family will be at the residence. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the VA Medical Center Home Health Team and the Mountain Area Hospice for their wonderful care during his illness. "And think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched…for nothing loved is ever lost…and he was loved so much!"
