Waynesville, James Dowe McElroy, age 89, of Flag Street, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Autumn Care of Waynesville. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James Lawson and Martha Dare Crawford McElroy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah McElroy, who died in 2002; a daughter, Lynn Ferguson; and sister, Leska Brown. He retired from Lea Industries as a supply clerk with 38 years of service. Dowe was a member of Ninevah Baptist Church and a long-term deacon. He loved woodworking, working in his yard, and sitting on Main Street chatting with the tourists. While at Autumn Care, he enjoyed playing bingo and was their 2011 Valentine King. He is survived by his son, Rick McElroy, and his wife, Sharon, of Waynesville; one brother, Lynwood McElroy; two sisters, Dorothy "Dot" Harrell and her husband, Leroy, of Waynesville; Joan Osborne and her husband, Massie, of Clyde; two grandchildren, Ryan McElroy and his wife, Michelle, and Sara Stevenson and her husband, Robert; two step-grandchildren, Ryan Cope and Haley Scofield; three great-grandchildren, William Stevenson, Ava Stevenson and Zoe Stevenson; five step-great-grandchildren; T. J. and Avery Scofield, Sidney and Olivia Fleegle, and Geridan McDonald. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Ninevah Baptist Church with Reverend Michael Leslie officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to services.
