James Nelson

November 3, 1962 — October 19, 2010

James Martin "Marty" Nelson, age 47, died on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at his residence after a long valiant battle with cancer. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of Joyce Mae White Nelson of Waynesville and the late James William Nelson. Marty was a Correctional Sgt. with the NC Department of Corrections and was a member of Calvary Road Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and camping, coaching Mountaineer Little League, and spending time with his family. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lora Lee Teague Nelson; two sons, James Martin "Marty" Nelson, Jr., and his wife, Diane, of Canton and Dustin Matthew Nelson of Clyde; a sister, Julie Woodard and her husband, Chris, of Sylva; two brothers, Scott Nelson and Kent Nelson and his wife, Camden, all of Waynesville; a granddaughter, Hannah Nelson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2010, at Calvary Road Baptist Church with the Reverend Johnny Swanger, III and Reverend Wayne Willett, and Reverend Mark Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Calvary Road Baptist Church Building Fund or Youth Fund, 77 Sutton Loop, Waynesville, NC 28786.
