Waynesville, James Roy Payne, Sr., age 88, died on Friday, March 27, 2009 at the Brian Center. A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late William and Gracie Mooneyham Payne. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie K. Payne, who died in 1997; one daughter, Linda Bumgarner; one sister; six brothers; one grandson; and one great grandson. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith. James enjoyed the outdoors and gardening, but more than anything else he loved the mountains. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. He is survived by three sons, Larry E. Payne and wife, Stella and James R. Payne and wife, Patricia, all of Waynesville and Samuel A. Payne and wife, Gayle, of Franklin; one son-in-law, John Bumgarner; three daughters, Brenda P. Ewart and husband, Don, of Clyde, Opal P. Tallent of Franklin, and Sue Lowson of Greenville, SC; two sisters, Annie Presnell of Waynesville and Thelma Rhinehart of Detroit, MI; one brother, Furman Payne, of Greenville, SC; 9 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Chris King officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Candler. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home, and at other times, the family will be at the residence of Larry Payne, 161 Riverbend Street, Waynesville. The family expresses a special thanks to the staff of the Brian Center.
