James Douglas Penland, age 65, of 22 Trammel Avenue, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at his residence. A native and lifelong residence of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Jim and Jewell Wood Penland. He was a driving instructor with Mountain Professionals. He was a 1963 graduate of Clyde High School where he was a three sport letterman and a 1968 graduate of Western Carolina University. Doug enjoyed his time coaching youth baseball and softball. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lisa McFadden Penland; a son, Ryan Douglas Penland and a daughter Ashley Lauren Penland both of Canton; three sisters, Judy McCracken of Flat Rock, Jill Miller of Candler, and Beth White of Asheville; a brother, Avery Haney of Weaverville. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at Clyde Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend Randy Tingle and Reverend James Hart officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for all of the many kind expressions of love and support extended to Doug and his family.
