James Baxter Reed, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, love, and cherished memories. A graduate of Candler High School, Jim also attended Blanton’s Business College. Born to a life of duty, Jim served in the United States Army and in the US State Department, traveling the world and leaving an indelible mark in places such as Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium, Uganda, Budapest, Oslo, Tel Aviv, Heidelberg, India, Kigali, Auckland, and Canberra. Jim also retired from a career with Delta Airlines. Despite his far-reaching travels, his heart always returned to the serene slopes of Dogwood in Candler, North Carolina, where he shared many treasured moments with his faithful canine companion, Baxter.
Jim was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by a wide circle of family and friends, including cousins Jamison and Stephanie Jackson, Whitney and Ben Cornish, Tim and Marilyn Wright, Marissa, Seth, and Samantha Wright, Lane and Hannah Grant, Chris Wright, Kyle, Greg, and Brian Rutherford, as well as numerous dear friends who became like family.
A man of many passions, Jim embraced life with an adventurous spirit. He delighted in exploring new horizons, nurturing his garden, savoring good meals, and sharing laughter with friends. His gentle nature and kind heart endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jim’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. As a dedicated volunteer and prayer partner at Snow Hill United Methodist Church, he touched the lives of many, embodying the values of compassion and generosity.
As we say goodbye to James Baxter Reed, let us honor his unwavering spirit, his deep kindness, and the countless ways he enriched our lives. Though he has departed from this world, his memory will forever shine brightly in our hearts.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at Snow Hill United Methodist Church with Reverend Tim Hunter officiating. Military Rites will be presented by the United States Army. The family will receive friends from 12:45 p.m. until service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Snow Hill United Methodist Church, 84 Snow Hill Church Road, Candler, NC 28715.
