James Rufus Fisher

February 20, 1940 — October 13, 2024

James “Jimmy” Rufus Fisher, 84, of Asheville passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024. A native of Sylva, NC, he was the son of the late Roy Jasper and Emma Leona Curtis Fisher. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Roy “Buddy” Fisher and Carroll Wilburn Fisher.

Jimmy proudly served in the US Air Force for over 20 years which included a tour during the Vietnam conflict. He earned a degree in Hospital administration and spent 10 years working with United States Postal Service. 

He was well loved, and always enjoyed picking on people. He opened his home to foster children and was thought of as a safe haven for all kids. His hobbies included genealogy and woodworking. He was a member of Crossroads Church.

He is survived by his wife, Iva Robinson Fisher; daughters, Jeania Fisher of Leicester, Jahala Fisher Berman and her husband, Mark of Biltmore Lake, Jennifer Fisher Roberts and her husband, Shannon of Weaverville and Kim Rivers of Asheville; sons, James Lee Fisher of Leicester, Mike Sitton and his wife, Sherri of Asheville, Matt Sitton and his wife, Kathy of Clyde and Mark Sitton and his wife, Susan of Asheville; sister, Emma Jean Ericson of Sylva; brother, Charles Fisher and his wife, Nell of Sylva, NC; 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and foster kids, Kim Teague of Florida and Cindy and Ronnie Braley of Texas.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2024, in Wells Chapel of Faith with Reverend Wade Zachary officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Private interment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The care of Mr. Fisher has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler.
