Waynesville-James H. ''Jim'' Sawyer, Jr., age 69, of Hodges Drive, in Thomas Park, died Saturday, December 20, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Swain County and had resided in Haywood County since 1959. He was the son of the late James H. and Davie Redmond Sawyer. He was also preceded in death by two sisters.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. He served on the board of directors of Western Carolina Bank, on the board of Daniel Boone Boy Scout Council, and worked with Troop #318. He was a former board member of the United Way. He was President of the U-Save Stores and Sawyer Supply Company of Waynesville.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Anna Messer Sawyer; two sons, James Henry ''Jimmy'' Sawyer, III and his wife, Shirley, and George Andrew Sawyer and his wife, Julie, all of Waynesville; a sister, Jean Barnes of Hickory; a brother, Daniel Sawyer of Asheville; and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Grace Sawyer.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Reverend Ned Martin will officiate. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2003, at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
The pallbearers will be Lawrence Medford, Bobby Justice, Billy Messer, Jim Barnes, Carlyle Ferguson, and Scott Evans.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crabtree United Methodist Church, 184 Ridgedale Road, Clyde, NC 28721.
