James Shuler

"1934 - 2017"

Candler - James E. Shuler, 82, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 21, 2017.

He was the son of the late Harley and Lelia Shuler. James was a veteran who proudly served in the Navy on the USS Sarsfield. His career was spent as the owner/operator of a heavy dump truck for 34 years.

He is survived by Julia White Shuler, whom he married when she was 17 and he was 19. They were married for 63 years. They both loved the outdoors and fishing, and would hike for hours to reach a stream and catch native trout. After his retirement in 1999, they traveled extensively in their camper, making multiple trips out west and to Canada. They owned a small citrus grove in Wauchula, Florida, and spent many winters enjoying the life of snowbirds with some special friends. In later years a favorite pastime was sitting on the porch of their log home, watching the deer play in their back yard. He was an old man of the mountains who loved to talk, and never, ever met a stranger.

James is also survived by his daughter, Jill Shuler (husband Bill Hurni), and two grandchildren, Tonna Davis (Damien) and James C. Shuler (Kristin), as well as 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, James Edwin Shuler.

The family gives special thanks to Dr. Deshpande and the staff at Asheville Hematology and Oncology. He was a warrior in his fight with cancer, and they were with him, providing not only treatment, but love and support. They are special people.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Eric Hill officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 2312 Smokey Park Highway, Candler, NC 28715 to support their outreach to feed local children.
