Canton-James Ray Stamey, age 86, of 7 Ferguson Street, died Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Oscar E. and Ollie E. Barrett Stamey. He was the husband of the late Vertie Mae Sutton Stamey who died in November 2004 and was also preceded in death by a grandson Adam Stamey, a sister Eloise Reece and a brother T. J. Stamey. Mr. Stamey retired from Champion International in 1981 with over 40 years of service and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a United States Army veteran serving in the European Theater. He is survived by three sons and their wives, Jerry R. and Barbara Stamey and Steve and Kathy Stamey, all of Canton and Michael and Becky Stamey of Orlando, FL, 4 grandchildren Andrew, Ronnie, Derrick and Eric Stamey and 2 great-granddaughters Jordan and Katie Stamey. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Dennis Ruff officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service.
