James Thompson

August 26, 1946 — March 7, 2003

Canton-James "Jim" I. Thompson-56, of 287 Rice Cove Road, died March 7, 2003 at his residence.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a son of Mary Reno Thompson and the late Hubert Thompson. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Thompson who died in Dec. 2002 and one son, James Irvin Thompson, Jr., who died in 1974. He was employed by Champion International for 20 years and Blue Ridge Paper for 18 months in the Human Resources Dept. He was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church. He was a football and baseball coach for 11 years with the Little League system. He served in the United States Army.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his ex-wife, Joy Thompson, a significant other, Jackie James of Arden, two sons, Kent Thompson and his wife Taryn and Travis Thompson all of Canton, three brothers and their wives, Donnie and Wilma Thompson of Canton, Judd and Cathy Thompson of Clyde and Glenn and Teresa Thompson of Enka-Candler and one grandson, Kade Thompson.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Beaverdam United Methodist Church with Reverend Naomi King officiating. Entombment will follow at Crawford/Ray Horizon Mausolem. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Homes of Canton. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cancer Care of WNC, 445 Biltmore Avenue, Suite 100, Asheville, NC 28801.
