James Whiteside, Sr.

James Donald Whiteside, Sr., 74, went home to be with Jesus on August 25, 2008. He was born in Haywood County on January 8, 1934 and resided in Candler, North Carolina for most of his life. Don was a devoted husband to the late Shirley Mann Whiteside and a wonderful and caring son to the late W. Ray Whiteside. He was a member of Glady Baptist Church of Candler. Don served in the United States Reserve in 1950 and joined the Air Force in 1952 and served until 1956 as an Airman 2nd Class. He is survived by his loving mother, Alice Gasperson Whiteside of Candler, a daughter and son-in law, Alesia and Johnny Roberson of Lexington, NC; three sons and daughters-in-law, James Richard and Debbie Whiteside, Jeffery Allen and TaraWhiteside all of Candler, James Donald Jr. and Marsha Whiteside of Kentucky; ten wonderful grandchildren; three sisters, Beki Taylor and her husband, Ron, of Candler, Shelia Hunter of Candler and Diane Jenkins and her husband, Bruce, of Kernersville; five brothers, Bill Whiteside and his wife, Jo, of Waynesville, Jack Whiteside and his wife, Barbara, of Candler, Dennis Whiteside and his wife, Patricia, of Decatur, Alabama, Roger Whiteside, and Steven Whiteside and his wife, Rochelle, all of Candler; three aunts, one uncle and many cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2008 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Charles Sprinkle officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716. The Whiteside family would like to thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for giving us such a wonderful and kind son, loving husband, kind and compassionate father, understanding and forgiving brother and such a friend as no other; because this was the essence of who Don Whiteside was to all of us.
