James Nelson

January 10, 1939 — April 5, 2010

Waynesville, James William "Jim" Nelson, age 71, of 359 Grandview Circle, passed away on Monday, April 5, 2010 at his residence. A native of Jackson County, he had lived most of his life in Haywood County and was the son of the late Alma Nelson Davis. He was a member of the Army National Guard and the Army Reserves. Jim was a retired maintenance supervisor for Haywood Correctional Center with 30 years service. He also was a former truck driver and enjoyed camping, traveling, and playing with his grandchildren and a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joyce White Nelson; three sons, Marty Nelson and his wife, Lora Lee, of Clyde, Scott Nelson and Kent Nelson and his wife, Camden, all of Waynesville; one daughter, Julie Woodard and her husband, Chris, of Sylva; two sisters, Eleanor Nicholson of Waynesville, and Margie Brookshire, of Greer, South Carolina; one brother, Frank Nelson, of Waynesville; a half brother, Johnny Davis, and a half sister, Sheila Adams, both of Atlanta, and half sister, Jeanette Hyatt, of Asheville; and ten grandchildren, Marty Nelson Jr. and his wife, Diane, Dustin and Eric Nelson, C. J. Woodard, and Heather, Travis, Kizer, Kentley, Kavender Grace, and Kolt Nelson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 2010 at Allens Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Eddie Deitz and Reverend John Swanger officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Doug Mitchell, Ed Shelton, David and Loye Tratham, Larry Brookshire, Kenneth and Matt Burrell, and Doyle Payne. Honorary pallbearers will be Mens No. 1 Sunday-School Class, Howard Leatherwood, and Jack Fisher. An honor guard will be provided through the North Carolina Department of Corrections. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the church. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC
