Waynesville-James Milas Wood, age 67, of 20 Victory Street, died Sunday, February 13, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Joseph Thomas Wood and Nellie Frady Wood. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Oscar Wood; a sister, Irene Wood; and one grandson, Andrew Wood. He was a 1960 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and drove a school bus for the Haywood County School System for 35 years with a perfect driving record. He was employed for 23 years at Dayco and worked in the curved hose department. He was a member of Balsam Baptist Church and loved gospel and bluegrass music. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lorene Shelton Wood; a daughter, Reneé Wood Sherrill and her friend, Hugh Mashburn, of Waynesville; three sons, Mike Wood of Waynesville, Kim "Kimbo" Wood and his friend, Georgia Gunter, of Waynesville, and Stephen Wood of Bryson City; a sister, Barbara Hill (Bill) of Gastonia; four brothers, Carl Wood (Vestia) of Candler, Thomas Wood (Peggy) of Blackburg, SC, Wesley Wood (Faye) of Mt. Holly, NC, and Hershel J. Wood (Joe Ann) of Lincolnton, GA; seven grandchildren, Trey Sherrill, Taylor Ledford, Jacob and Whittney Edwards, Brittney Wood, and Stephanie and Stacy Wood; and one great granddaughter, Deslyn Tay Sherrill. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Mike Leslie and Pastor Lee Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at Balsam Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at the funeral home and at other times, at the residence or at his daughter's home, 1514 Crymes Cove Road, Waynesville. Serving as pallbearers will be Trey and Dan Sherrill, Rick and Taylor Ledford, Jacob Edwards, Ronnie Surrett, Dewayne Sharp, and Kelly Rogers. Honorary pallbearers will be Carroll and Bill Hyatt, Ed and Earl Shelton, Jimmy Sharp, David Rogers, Hugh Mashburn, Roger Cogdill, Gerald Kilpatrick, Steve Davis, Shane Sharp, and Keith Rogers.
