Janet Burnham

February 22, 1937 — May 13, 2016

Canton, Janet Stauffer Burnham, age 79, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Maggie Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. A native of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Bertha Gaddis Stauffer; she was also preceded in death by one sister, Jean Burriss. Janet graduated with a major in music from Woman's College, now UNC Greensboro. One of the highlights of her career was singing in the Choir at Bruton Parish Church, in Williamsburg, Virginia. She later was featured in the production Music of Williamsburg. She then became the lead actress in Honey in the Rock, an outdoor drama, in Beckley, West Virginia. After a career in law and healthcare administration, Janet assisted Mountain Projects with various policies and procedures documentation for over 10 years. Janet was a member of Grace Church in the Mountains, and spent the last decade of her life happily gardening in the shadow of Cold Mountain near the Pigeon River. Janet is survived by one son, Ashley Burnham, and his wife, Margaret; two granddaughters, Madeline and Caity Burnham, all of Greensboro; one sister Joan Moore, of Lake City, South Carolina and several nieces and nephews. A remembrance service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Wells Events and Reception Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Projects Share the Warmth, 2251 Old Balsam Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
