Janet Miles

Waynesville-Janet D. Miles, age 79, of Medford Avenue, died on Sunday, June 18, 2006. A native of Madison, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Howard J. and Ina Wood Douglass and was preceded in death by her brother, Howard Wood Douglass. She was a graduate of Middlesboro High School in KY, attended Ohio Wesleyan University, and received a BA degree in nursing at Vanderbilt University. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville and the Faith Sunday-School Class. She was a Sunday-school teacher and served in various positions within the church including the Handbell Choir and Stephen Ministry. She was an active volunteer with "Discover God's Call," a ministry of the Foundation for Evangelism with the United Methodist Church, in which she held national positions. Her hobbies were anything to do with fiber arts, with knitting and weaving being her favorites. She knit over 240 sweaters to be sent to Guidepost for children and gave away over a thousand hand made hug pillows. She also delivered meals-on-wheels. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, T. Walter Miles; two daughters, Elizabeth Stewart Eltinge and husband, John, of Oakton, VA and Janet Wood Miles Miller and husband, Reverend Steven, of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; two sons, Thomas "Tom" Walter Miles, Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Morristown, TN and Howard Douglass Miles and wife, Teresa, of Georgetown, KY; eight grandchildren, Amy Clifton, Meredith and Elizabeth Miles, Stephen and Sarah Eltinge, and Katherine, Andrew, and Rebecca Miller; one great-granddaughter, Layna Sides; and various nieces and nephews and special friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville and following the service at the church in the gathering area. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Stephen Ministry Fund, c/o First UMC of Waynesville, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786 or to the Lymphoma Society, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28210.
