Janice Smathers

Janice Louise Smathers, age 85, died Sunday, August 27, 2006, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was a native and life long resident of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Walter G. and Eva West Smathers. Ms. Smathers was a graduate of Clyde High School, Mars Hill Junior College and Western Carolina Teachers College. She also did some graduate work in organ music at Ashbury College in KY. She was a retired school teacher, having taught for 33 years in the Clyde, Hazelwood and Candler elementary school systems. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority. Ms. Smathers was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Clyde where she served as pianist, organist and choir director for 55 years. She is survived by her brother, Julian Smathers of Clyde. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at Clyde Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend Randy Tingle, Reverend Dr. W.T. Medlin, Jr. and Reverend James Hart officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the services at the church. Pallbearers will be members of the United Methodist Men of Clyde Central United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Organ Fund of Clyde Central United Methodist Church, P.O.
