JAY R. MARKLEY
Waynesville-Jay Robert Markley, age 54, died unexpectedly Monday, December 23, 2002.
A native of Washington, DC, he was the son of Jean Saunders Markley of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and the late Robert Jay Markley. He was a graduate of Suitland High School in Suitland, Maryland and attended the University of Maryland and Western Carolina University and had obtained his masters degree in guidance and counseling. He was the Adult Services Supervisor for the Haywood County Department of Social Services and was instrumental in the development in the Meals-On-Wheels Program in Haywood County. He had also served on the Advisory Board of Mountain Projects. He was a member of the Smoky Mountain Brass Band, the Haywood Community Band, and was also a member of the Haywood County Schools Foundation Board. He was a member of the Army National Guard and was a member of the National Guard Band in Washington, D.C. and Hartford, Connecticut. He also served in Desert Shield Operation with the 211th Military Police Unit of Clyde. Jay also assisted in numerous military graveside services by playing taps. He was a member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of more than 32 years, Mary Jane Terrell Markley; a daughter, Laura Jean Markley of the home; two sons, Robert Jay Markley and his wife, Lisa, of Apex, NC and Johnathan Gabriel Markley and his wife, Connie, of the home; one brother, James H. Markley and his wife, Debbie, of Coeur d Alene, Idaho; a brother-in-law, Arnold Terrell and his wife, Deborah, of Tampa, Florida; a sister-in-law, Judy Councill, and her husband, Mike, of Black Mountain; four nephews, Jarrod, Ryan, and Hunter Councill, and Alan Markley; a niece, Anna Markley; and his mother-in-law, Betty Terrell of Clyde.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2002 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Rob Fuquay and Reverend Kitty Crain officiating. Burial will follow at Fincher's Chapel Cemetery with military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2002 at the Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
