Jean Clampitt

Jean Waters Clampitt, age 80, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, January 10, 2014, at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Lonzo W. and Pearl Spence Waters. She was a 1952 graduate of Canton High School and a graduate of Blanton's Business College. Jean was employed with Lake Junaluska Golf Course for 14 years. Prior to her last employment, she was an employee with Merrill Lynch and Commercial Credit. She was also employed as a medical secretary at an Asheville physicians firm. She was a former church secretary at Calvary Baptist Church. Jean was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church and she was a true woman of faith, a people person, relished her role as a mother, and her family was most important in her life. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, James Clifton Clampitt; a daughter, Cathy Bechtel and her husband, Lou, of Greensboro; two sons, Mike Clampitt of Clyde and Mark Clampitt and his wife, Donna, of Arden; a sister, Dorothy Griggs of Jacksonville, Florida; a brother, Jack Waters and his wife, Sue, of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Brent, Brandon, and Blake Jamison, Jeff Bechtel, Janeé Lowman, Shane Clampitt, and Angelina Clampitt; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2014 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Pastor Roy Kilby officiating. Entombment will follow at The Horizon at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Flowers are acceptable and appreciated or memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 5868 Pigeon Road, Canton, NC 28716. The family also wishes to express their appreciation to the John F. Keever Solace Center for the kind and compassionate care given to Jean.
