Jean Burke Stringfellow, age 64, of the Dix Creek Community died Friday, March 4, 2005 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Wake Forest. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the daughter of the late Jim and Mozelle Wooten Burke. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Burke. She retired in 1999 from Ingles Markets, Inc. with 30 years of service as a deli-bakery merchandiser. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was an active choir member. Jean was always giving of herself, volunteering at the Open Door Soup Kitchen and she had a love of cooking and catering. In addition to her husband, William Thomas (Tommy) Stringfellow, she is survived by a son, David Burke and his wife, Clydette of Canton; a step-daughter, Joy Bryson of Jacksonville, FL; three sisters, Joyce Deaver of Waynesville, Eva Mae Kirby of Brevard and Margaret Ferguson of Canton; two brothers, Paul Burke of Horse Shoe and Jimmy Burke of Canton; five grandchildren, Brent and Faith Burke, Eddie Turner, Jason Bryson and Heather Mullins and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2005 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Reverend Heath Davis and Reverend Perry Brindley officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens with Lawrence Lanning, Eugene Shepherd, Mike Singleton, Jewell Burnette, R. W. Stuart and Allen Lee serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. Sunday at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in Jean's memory to Samaratin's Purse International Relief for Tsunami Victims, P. O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28807-3000.
