Waynesville-Jeffrey Jay "Jeff" Smathers, age 41, of 3838 Hwy 110, Canton, passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at his residence. Born in Ft. Hauchuca, Arizona, he lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of Carroll and Bernice Smathers of Waynesville. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Grasty. He was a 1982 graduate of Tuscola High School and had worked for Builders First Source of Asheville for the past eight years. In addition to his parents, he was survived by a daughter, Kristina Smith; two sisters, Kathy Smathers of Waynesville and Belinda Lowe and her husband, Ed, of Canton; two brothers, Carroll Smathers, Jr. and his wife, Kimberly, of Nashville, TN and Ed Smathers of Waynesville; a brother-in-law, Fred Grasty, of Maggie Valley; nieces; Johnna, Savanna, Kaelyn, and Beth; and nephews, Shaun, Cody, Corey, Collin, and Connor. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2005 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Father Dennis McGowan officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26 at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Nick, Rob, Brian K., and Adam Smathers, Ed Lowe, and Josh Warren.
