Jerry Smathers

Jerry Carroll Smathers, 55, of the Dutch Cove Community died Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at his residence. He was a native of Haywood County and the son of Frederick and Bettie Smathers of Canton. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Evelyn Wilkins; his grandparents, Charles and Mable Hardin and Oscar and Lucy Smathers. He was the District Wood Procurement Manager for Blue Ridge Paper Products and a graduate of Gardner-Webb College. Among Jerry's interests was his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and raising walking horses. He served on the board of directors for the N. C. Forestry Association and was currently president of the WNC Multiple Use Council. He loved his work at Morning Star United Methodist Church of which he was a lifelong member. Jerry was a loving son, husband, father, and a friend to all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Susan W. Smathers; two sons, Matt Smathers and his wife, Brooke, of Newnan, GA and Michael Clayton Smathers of Canton; a brother, Kermit Eugene Smathers of Canton; and his father-in-law, Creed P. Wilkins of Canton. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2006, at Morning Star United Methodist Church with the Reverend Doug Love officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church and burial will follow the visitation in the church cemetery. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
