Jerry Matthews

1940 - 2021

Jerry Hill Matthews, passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at Haywood Regional Hospital.

A native of Hollywood, Florida, he was a son of the late Thetis and Clinton Moses Matthews.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son.  As a young man he was a sheet metal worker and enjoyed working with his hands and eventually became a talented woodworker and enjoyed time in his shop creating furniture and accessories; and also made items for Mast General Stores.

Jerry was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and University of Alabama football teams.  Over the years he attended several Super Bowl games.  He also was in the stands many times for the Indy 500 races.

He was generous and anonymously would help young moms in need.

Jerry is survived by his wife, of 53 years, Mary Jane Matthews; son, Clinton Timothy Matthews, and his wife, Kalyn Galloway Matthews; granddaughter, Juno Maguire Matthews, of Clyde; sister, Joan Biller, and her husband, Jerry Biller; and a nephew, Bryan Biller, of Waynesville.

The care of Mr. Matthews has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
