Jerry Smith

Clyde - Jerry Lee Smith, age 57, died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Arthur Henry Smith. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Ann Moody. Mr. Smith was a 1967 graduate of Tuscola High School and attended N.C. State University. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He also served in the 211th MP, Army National Guard during the Gulf War. Jerry accumulated over 22 years of service in the United States military. He was former employee of McDonald Douglas as a technical representative in Iran. He was a retired sergeant from the Waynesville Police Department where he had served as a patrol officer, detective, shift sergeant, special response team commander and field training officer. He was the recipient of the Officer of the Year Award by Haywood County Fraternal Order of Police. The future awards will be named in his honor as the Jerry L. Smith Award. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Caron Ferguson Smith; his mother and step-father, Helen Sherrill Whitner and her husband, D.A. of Waynesville; one daughter, Windy S. Miller and her husband, Matthew of Bethel; one son, Travis Branson Smith and his wife, Courtney of Clyde; a step-sister, Ellen Mackey of Maggie Valley; a step-brother, Brian Whitner of Canton and three grandsons Koty and Dalten Trantham and Ty Miller. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with the Reverend Alan Davis, Chaplin Dick Campbell of the Waynesville Police Department and Reverend Paul Carden officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with full military honors conducted jointly by the military and law enforcement officers. The family will receive friends from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Monday, September 25th at the funeral home, and at other times, at the residence.
