Canton - Jesse Howard Burnette, 94, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of Ellis Fulton and Terry Smathers Burnett. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Max Burnette and George Fulton Burnett; and one sister, Mary Burnette Wright.
He was a member of Cruso United Methodist Church, a 1942 graduate of Bethel High School, an employee of Champion International and Ecusta Paper Companies, and a United States Veteran of World War II. He served in Europe with the 44th Engineers Combat Battalion. Howard was captured in Luxemburg during the "Battle of the Bulge" and was held a prisoner of war (POW) for the last five months of the war in Europe. He was a great fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Audrey Sherrill Burnette; two sons, Robert A. Burnette (Stephanie Trull) and Phillip H. Burnette; four grandchildren, Keeden Burnette, Kasee and her husband Kolby Pressley, Amber Pressley and Levi Pressley; two sisters, Peggy B. Erwin and Laura B. Boone; a brother-in-law, Leonard M. Wright; and several nieces and nephews..
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Aryn Ruebel officiating and Ms. Linda Davis delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
