Jessie Downes

Jessie Theodore Downes, age 82, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Macon County and had resided most of his life in Buncombe County and in Haywood County for 2 ½ years. He was the son of the late Jessie Ballard and Beulah Mae Brendle Downes and was also preceded in death by a brother, Billy Downes. He joined the military at the age of 17 and served for 13 ½ years in all four branches as a nurse/medic during the China evacuation and Korean Conflict. While in the military, he earned his education and nursing credentials. He retired from Kinco Corporation with 40 years of service and was a member of Plains United Methodist Church. Jess was a talented carpenter and enjoyed making furniture and cabinetry. He was known for his dedicated work ethic and generosity he showed toward others. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jewel Pitts Downes; a son, Ed Downes of Canton; a sister-in-law, Peggy Murphy of Orangeburg, South Carolina; two foster sisters, Joyce Meadows of Midway, Tennessee and Sue Sams of Candler; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Plains United Methodist Church with the Reverend Ryan C. Snider and Reverend Garnett Pitts officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Plains United Methodist Church, 2029 Newfound Road, Canton, NC 28716.
