Jincy Owen Messer, age 94, died Friday, November 30, 2007 at Pigeon Valley Rest Home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a daughter of the late Thomas Pulaski and Carrie Owen. She was a member of Haywood County Retired Teachers Association and taught school at Bethel, Patton, and Canton High School. Jincy worked in Canton Red Cross for several years and served on the town of Canton's beautification committee. She served as an active member of the senior Democratic Club. Jincy volunteered to deliver meals on wheels and often visited the sick and took food on many different occasions. She volunteered at nursing homes and received the National AARP award for exceptional volunteer service in 1990. She taught Sunday school at First Baptist Church of Canton for many years. Jincy helped her husband, the late Ernest Messer who served as Haywood County's Representative in the State Legislature, in many ways. House of Representatives, the late Ernest Messer served four years as Assistant secretary of Division of Aging. He, with the help of Jincy, took part in developing the Senior Olympic Game Program of North Carolina and its associated programs in many of the counties in North Carolina. A health enthusiast, Jincy worked out at a fitness center and took water aerobic classes until the last three years of her life. She is survived by one daughter, Patsy Poovey and her husband, Clyde, of Alpharetta, GA; two grandsons, Brant Poovey and Phillip Poovey and his wife, Lauren; and two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Kendall. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2007 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jack Sammons officiating. Burial will follow in Locust Field Cemetery.
