Joan Kent

January 17, 1936 — November 14, 2012

Shirley Joan Queen Kent, age 76, passed away on Wednesday November 14, 2012, at John F. Keever Solace Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Bessie Dills Queen. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Patsy Hipps and her husband, E. L. Hipps. She was a charter member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served as Church Clerk and Director of the WMU program for many years. She retired from Mission Hospital as a Registered Nurse with 26 years of service in the Neurosciences Unit. She is survived by a son, Gregory Kent and his wife, Nancy, of Madera, California; a brother, Dwayne Queen and his wife, Sue Ellen, of Milton, Florida; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Rebekah Kent of Fresno, California; three nieces, Deborah Queen, Terri Autrey, and Dianne Queen; a nephew, Gary Hipps; several great nieces and nephews; and many friends including caregiver, Kathey Ponder of Weaverville, NC. Services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Doug Henson, Reverend H. L. Wilson, and Reverend Anthony Fox officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to Welcome Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 514 Queentown Road, Canton, NC 28716 or to CarePartners Hospice Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
