Joe Haynes

Waynesville Joseph C. Haynes, age 86, of Crabtree Road, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Madison County, he was a lifelong resident of Haywood County. He was the son of the late Harley Estes and Virginia Lowe Haynes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Willa Jean Haynes, who died in 2001; two brothers, Franklin and Clayton Haynes; and two sisters, Cleo Haynes and Naomi Waddell. He was a proud US Army veteran, having served during World War II. Known as an "entrepreneur," Joe loved farming and enjoyed working with his cattle. He loved and cared for people, especially those less fortunate than himself. He was a member of Panther Creek Baptist Church and will always be remembered for his giving heart and spirit. He is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Haynes Styles of Spartanburg, SC and Mary Haynes of Lake Junaluska; five sons, Jim Haynes and his wife, Regina, Teddy Haynes and wife, Marie, and Joe Ray "J.R." Haynes, all of Waynesville, David Haynes of Lake Junaluska, and Darryl Mathis of Maggie Valley; three sisters, Evelyn Davis of Winston-Salem, Lillian Messer and husband, Herman, of Enka, and Yvonne Hannah and husband, Carl, of Hendersonville; thirteen grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a special sister-in-law, Corky Kuhn, and husband, Richard, of Orlando, FL; former wife, Elsie Fulbright Haynes, of Waynesville; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Antioch Baptist Church with Reverend Steve Taylor officiating and J.R. Haynes presenting a eulogy. Entombment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers will be Chad, Matt, Mike, and J. C. Haynes, Lewis Messer, and Robbie Hannah. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 2:45 p.m. on Saturday morning prior to services at the church.
